The USACS EM & CC High-Fidelity Simulation Based Skills Lab provides a detailed course focused on procedure and simulation training. It covers topics like wound care management, non-invasive orthopedic methods, lumbar puncture skills, and more. Each procedure includes learning about when to use it, what to avoid, required tools, techniques, possible complications, suitable locations, follow-up care, and key tips for effective execution. Participants will practice hands-on in a safe setting, using advanced task trainers and realistic simulation scenarios. The course will have small groups of 5-6 students for close supervision by expert instructors. Attendees will have many chances for guided practice on all procedures, with two full days dedicated to instruction and practice in the simulation lab.

 

High Fidelity Simulation Lab: 

  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Surgical airway management
  • Needle thoracostomy
  • Chest tube thoracostomy
  • Central venous access
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Arthrocentesis
  • Intra-osseous cannulation
  • Wound care: I&D abscesses, suture repair
  • Splinting
  • Peripheral nerve blocks (facial, wrist, ankle, femoral)
  • Ultrasound Techniques, including vascular access, peripheral nerve blocks, and FAST exams.
  • Airway station with manikin intubation using adult and pediatric models, demonstration of airway adjuncts (King Vision, Glideslope, LMA, Combi tube I-gel, SALT)

 

Additional Content included:  Documentation pearls, Risk and CMT utilization, ACLS Review, Splinting and EKG interpretation.

High risk scenarios covered: unexplained tachycardia, non-traumatic back pain, pediatric bronchiolitis, trauma, abdominal pain, eye pain, acute leg pain, chest pain and much more

Target Audience

Advanced Practice Providers in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine seeking to enhance their expertise in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Procedures.

Learning Objectives

  • Providers will be able to define the indications and contraindications in all identified skills.

  • Providers will be able to demonstrate competency in all identified skills.

  • Providers will be able to identify the common complications and management of those complications in all identified skills.

  • Providers will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the correct use of the equipment necessary to perform each of these skilled procedures.

  • Providers will be able to recognize and initiate appropriate management in high-risk clinical scenarios.
